Working for Around Town Flats has essentially allowed me to ‘test drive’ my future career
To those of you who have just graduated from university; listen in. I have spent the last 12 months as an intern in the Lettings Team here at Around Town Flats. All I can say is that beyond any doubt, my first job out of university has been great. As a paid intern I’ve become far more employable, gained a strong sense of purpose and been able to secure a placement at an international property consultancy as well as a place on the country’s finest Masters course in Real Estate.
As an Ancient History graduate my degree was not directly linked to a specific vocation and so throughout my time at university I was not primarily focused on what I was going to become. Like me, some of you may have found the thought of getting into the world of work has not really sprung to mind until after the stress of final exams, the throwing of mortarboards and the popping of champagne corks at graduation. But fear not, it’s never too late to find a great first job like I did. I had an inkling of where I wanted to go and what I wanted to do, but Around Town Flats has channelled this interest into a strong ambition to succeed in a career in property.
Both Around Town Flats and I have understood that this year has been a stepping stone to bigger things for me. The huge level of understanding, wisdom and nurture from the management has meant I have gained experience in areas which have helped further my ambition to work in property; it’s been so exciting working for clients for the first time and even getting to value properties.
There’s been so many extra perks too, and working in a closely knit team I have made strong friendships that I know will last long after I leave here. As well as regular team drinks on a Friday, climbing on Wednesdays and cinema on Tuesdays, I’ve been to a few smashing parties including an evening of Go-Karting! And when it came to interviews for placements at big firms, I could rattle off endless examples of when I’ve worked in a team, taken the initiative, exceeded targets and advised clients. Needless to say, I wouldn’t be where I am now if it weren’t for Around Town Flats.
Working for an SME (Small Medium Enterprise) like Around Town Flats has essentially allowed me to ‘test drive’ my future career. Unlike at bigger firms, my work and responsibility has had a real impact on the business and for all they have given me, in return I have offered enthusiasm, hard work and diligence which has no doubt been valued. As the excitement grows for what’s in store for me over the next two years, I can only look back, smile and think, “what a fantastic year”.
